What is it?
Holux GR-239
'cigarette lighter' powered Bluetooth GPS receiver.
The stylish and handy cigarette lighter-style design allows for
hours of long use in your car, making your vehicle function as a
GPS-embedded system. It uses a car cigarette lighter socket as a
power supply saving you the trouble of recharging it. GR-239 brings a
whole new experience of GPS mobility.
The GR-239 has numerous
advantages over previous receiver options:
-
No need to worry about receiver
positioning, it always goes in your cigarette slot. (If you don't
want this, an adapter can always be used)
-
No need to worry about powering
the device, and no batteries to charge; just plug it in and go!!!!
-
Stopping the device from
sliding around the car and securing it safely can sometimes be a
problem. Thanks to the GR-239's design, it stays secure exactly
where you want it to be!

Performance
This device runs the very
latest SiRF Star III chipset. What does that mean for you? This means you have
improved battery life, but most importantly it has much greater
sensitivity, allowing you to track up to 20 satellites at once; this
is far greater than many other products! Why do you need 20
satellite tracking? It means faster start-ups, so you need not be
sitting waiting in your car for up to 5 minutes before every
journey! However, perhaps the biggest difference of increased
sensitivity is when using in locations such as cities, sheltered
areas, woodlands or canyons (maybe not in the UK). In these
situations, older inferior GPS devices may loose signal, sending
you around in circles or crashing your navigation software.
From personal experience
at least 20
satellite tracking is a necessity, its no fun being boomeranged
around London because your GPS device is suffering from a lack of
signal due to interference caused by tall buildings. The only way to get out of
a situation like that would be to pick a direction, and just drive until a new
route is calculated, thanks to the SiRF III chipset, this is a thing
of the past!
Due to its sensitivity
this device can be used indoors, it can even work from inside your glove box! In comparison nearly all
other GPS devices I have tried need to see about 60% of the sky i.e.
it needs to be in front of the window, not with SiRF III though!

Why use
Bluetooth and not a wired gps?
Bluetooth brings an end to the
hassle of having to keep everything together in one place. It allows
you to choose the best spot for signal strength; whether in your car/van or even a lorry
(since Bluetooth has a
range of 10 meters), you sit in the driving seat with your software,
the GPS sits in the best signal area.
It is especially handy for for hiking, cycling
or when motorcycling since the GPS can be put in a pocket or a bag,
keeping your hands free, as well as your device safe.
As with other solutions
you wont have an impractical adapter hanging over the edge of your Pocket
PC,
adding to the weight, reducing functionality, as in most Compact
Flash GPS solutions!
